Course Schedule
Course Delivery Format
The Master of Health Administration program at the H-E-B School of Business and Administration follows a specific sequential course schedule to ensure students continue to effectively build on their learning and progress through degree completion. Courses are delivered in an eight-week, mini-semester format throughout the year with each course only offered once a year. Classes are held exclusively in the evenings and meet twice a week from 6 to 10 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the residential classes and on Monday and Wednesday evenings for the online live classes. Students take two courses at a time during most of the eight-week terms. This is considered a full-time program and a part-time option is not available.
Year 1 - Fall Semester
HADM 6360 Managing Healthcare Organizations
The purpose of this course is to provide the student an understanding of management principles for the purpose of achieving health services organizational goals and objectives. Emphasis is placed on the skills and competencies necessary for effective health services management as well as the functions performed by, and roles required of, middle-level managers. Critical skills, competencies and roles covered in the course include those related to motivation, leadership, conflict management, negotiation, problem-solving, power and influence, communication, coordination and support service management. Course topics are discussed and explored within the context of key organizational dimensions including environment, structure, process, human resources, performance and adaptability.
HADM 6305 Health Services Financial Management I
This course provides students with the foundations of financial and managerial accounting applied to the unique healthcare services delivery environment. Topics covered in this course include healthcare insurance and reimbursement methodologies, preparing financial statements originating at the individual business transaction level, evaluating financial statements and other operating indicators to assess and improve the operational status and financial condition of health services organizations, managing the revenue cycle, and conducting cost and profit analysis.
HADM 6306 Health Services Financial Management II
This course provides students with the necessary foundation for understanding and managing the financial aspects of the modern healthcare organization. Topics covered include organizational budget preparation and variance analysis, cost allocation decisions, application of the time value of money and cash flows to return on investment decisions, evaluation of debt and equity financing, including management of financial risk. Additionally, students will be exposed to the complex reimbursement methodologies currently used in the health services field and learn how to make pricing decisions.
HADM 6320 Organizational Behavior and Theory in Healthcare
The focus of this course is the application of theory in the organizational healthcare setting. Emphasis is placed on the skills and competencies necessary for effective healthcare leaders who must motivate and lead others in adapting their organizations in a dynamic and constantly changing environment. This course focuses on in-depth analysis of the theories and concepts of organizational behavior and theory as well as the functions performed by, and roles required of, entry- and middle-level managers. This course will progress from individual, to group, to organizational dynamics in the healthcare setting.
Year 1 - Spring Semester
HADM 6302 Healthcare Economics
This course orients students to the economic principles that influence market performance, management decision-making, and the formulation, implementation and evaluation of policy within the health services industry. Additionally, this course provides the students with a comprehensive view of the insurance market and introduces legislative dynamics that impact market behavior.
HADM 6303 Population Health and Epidemiology
This course introduces students to the principles of epidemiology as a diagnostic discipline of population health and a framework for evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of resource allocation related to the triple aim of a) improving population health, b) improving the healthcare experience, and c) decreasing per capita costs.
