Continuing Education

During the summer months, the five departments in 不良研究所’s School of Media and Design – 3D Animation and Game Design, the Department of Communication Arts, the Department of Graphic Design, the Juren Sullivan Center for Fashion Management, and the Department of Interior Design – offer free opportunities for teachers, industry professionals, and members of the community to develop their skills in the relevant areas. The summer Continuing Education program invites adults ages 18 and older to take part in courses designed to develop skills and concept fluency.

This summer’s courses will be held June 8-12, 2026, on 不良研究所’s Broadway campus. Information on each department’s offerings and registration information are below.

School of Media and Design Summer Continuing Education

The Department of 3D Animation and Game Design offers face-to-face continuing education for high school teachers who are teaching or about to teach 3D animation, modeling or game technology classes.

Join our faculty for a week-long overview of an animation pipeline. The 30-hour in-person program is free with registration and enrollees should plan to attend each day.

Modeling

The modeling session will consist of an interactive demo where participants will join along in sculpting/modeling a basic item.

Texturing
instructor: Adam Blair 
The texturing session covers the fundamentals of applying color, specular, normal, and roughness maps to your character.

Rigging
instructor: Jingtian Li
The rigging session covers the fundamentals of the joint structure of a humanoid creature and skinning techniques. Various auto rig and skinning tools are used.

Animation/Unreal Importing
instructor: Kassandra Arevalo
This session covers the fundamentals of animation, including principles and simple exercises. We will also cover importing your character and animations into Unreal. 

Animation
instructor: Emily Sidler
This animation session will cover basic body mechanics for games, including a walk, run, and jump. 

Unreal Engine Implementation (morning session)
instructor: Emily Sidler
This game implementation section will cover how to export a character and animation from Maya and put it into Unreal. 

Unreal Engine Implementation (afternoon session)
instructor: Emily Sidler
This game implementation section will cover how to create an animation blueprint in Unreal Engine and attach animations to the character.

The Graphic Design Department’s Summer Continuing Education program offers dynamic, hands-on workshops designed to strengthen creative thinking, technical skills, and visual communication. From visual note-taking and user experience principles to typography, icon systems, motion graphics, and hands-on design projects, participants will explore both analog and digital approaches to making. Sessions emphasize process, craft, systems thinking, and the translation of ideas into clear, compelling visual outcomes. Whether working with paper and pencil or inside Adobe Illustrator and After Effects, each workshop is structured as a focused, three-hour experience that blends practical application with creative exploration. Participants would be introduced to Sketchnotes as a simple, visual note-taking method that combines words and drawings to capture ideas, improve understanding, and support creative thinking.

Sketchnotes 102 - Practical Application of Visual Notetaking

Participants would discover how visual note-taking techniques can be used for mind-mapping, project planning, visual summaries, and making complex ideas easier (and more fun) to understand.

Bitmaps and Vectors and Motion, Oh My!: Fun with After Effects
instructor: Michael Clayton
Participants will explore how different file types function in Adobe After Effects while creating playful title designs that emphasize movement, personality, and visual storytelling.

Let’s Have a Party: Designing a Fiesta Medal 
instructor: Michael Clayton 
Participants will roll up their sleeves and design a Fiesta medal by hand, sketching, refining, and redrawing their ideas to scale while focusing on craft, clarity, and creating a tight drawing ready for vector production.

Icon Design System: Style Variations
instructor: Teresa Trevino 
Participants will explore two styles: flat and 3D (square and isometric grid). Participants will explore line, solid shapes, and hybrid approaches, while experiment with techniques for adding volume, and shading. This session will reinforce the use of constraints as well as system thinking.

Principles of UX for Lesson Planning
instructor: Chris Castillo 
User Experience (UX) designers rely on various guiding principles to create exceptional experiences. These same principles can be applied to the classroom experience to create more engaging lessons and more effective classes.

Low-Tech Media 
instructor: Doris Palmeros
Exploring low-tech methods of printing. Xerox Transfers, Stamping, Stencil, Layering, and Paper Cut-Outs. We will create posters that combine image and type. This will be an analog workshop.

Expressive Typography
instructor: Doris Palmeros 
Exploring expressive typography and creating designs using “type as image” methods. We will be working in Adobe Illustrator or analog.

Zine Workshop
instructor: Doris Palmeros 
Exploring zines and publication design to understand sequence, type & image connections and self-publishing. We will be working in Adobe Illustrator or analog.

Forced Connections
instructor: Doris Palmeros 
The juxtaposition of symbols can create concepts, metaphors and visual puns. We will be using Adobe Illustrator.

Interior Design

The interior design department offers face-to-face continuing education courses for high school teachers and members of the public interested in developing and understanding more about the industry, including space planning, model building, wellness, sustainability, building codes, hand-sketching interiors, lighting and electrical, and the Sketchup program. Two courses per day are offered in three-hour blocks.

Sketchup: Part 1

This course is an introduction to Sketchup tools used to create 3D models from floor plans and generate 3D Views. Suggestions for course assignments will be given.

Sketchup: Part 2

This course builds upon Part 1 using more advanced tools including materials, textures, modeling furniture, and project presentation. Suggestions for course assignments will be given.

Autodesk Revit: Part 1
instructor: Judy Ruvuna
This introductory class will cover the basics of using Autodesk Revit to create basic construction drawings and generate 3D views. Suggestions for course assignments will be given.

Autodesk Revit: Part 2

This course builds content from Part 1 and focuses on developing advanced Revit skills. Suggestions for course assignments will be given.

Enscape
instructor: Judy Ruvuna
This course will give hands-on explanation of how to create realistic renderings in Revit using Enscape. This course builds on content in Autodesk Revit sessions.

Historic Preservation
instructor: Judy Ruvuna
This class will provide an overview of the principles of historic preservation, and how these fit into the  design process. This is an introductory course; no prior knowledge is required. Suggestions for course
assignments will be given.

WELL Building Standard
instructor: Adam Nash
This class will provide an overview of the WELL Building Standard and its integration into a design studio  course. This is an introductory course; no prior knowledge is required. Suggestions for course assignments will be given.

Design for Social Impact
instructor: Adam Nash
This class will explain the meaning and importance of Social Impact Design in the Interior Design profession, integration of Trauma-Informed Design principles and the development of a Social Impact focused studio course; no prior knowledge is required. Suggestions for course assignments will be
given.

Physical Board Construction
instructor: Liza Casillas
This class will cover techniques and tools used in Physical Board Construction. Each participant will construct a board using a given plan, and suggestions for course assignments will be provided.

Digital Board Construction
instructor: Liza Casillas
This class will cover techniques and tools used in Digital Board Construction. Each participant will construct a digital board using a given plan, and suggestions for potential course assignments will be provided. Basic understanding of Adobe Applications preferred (Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign).
